Ingredients:
- 1 cup chana dal (split chickpeas)
- 2 cups water (for soaking)
- 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 finely chopped onion
- 1 finely chopped tomato
- 1 chopped green chili
- 1-inch grated piece of ginger
- 3-4 garlic cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt as per taste
- 2 cups water (for cooking)
- Fresh chopped coriander leaves(for garnish)
Method:
- Rinse the chana dal and soak the chana dal in 2 cups of water for 2 hours. Drain the water before using.
- put the soaked chana dal, a pinch of salt and 2 cups of water to a pressure cooker.
- Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the chana dal is soft and cooked through.
- Heat the oil or ghee over medium flame in a separate pan.
- Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
- Add chopped onions and fry until they turn into golden brown.
- Add the chopped green chili, grated ginger, and garlic. fry for a couple of minutes.
- Add turmeric, red chili, coriander powder, and garam masala. cook for a minute.
- Add the chopped tomato and cook until it turns soft and the oil starts to separate from the masala.
- Add the cooked chana dal to the pan with the tempered spices. Mix it well and add salt.
- Add about 1/2 to 1 cup of water to adjust the consistency of the dal. cook the dal for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Garnish the Chana Dal Fry with fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with rice or roti, naan.
