Chana Dal Fry recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chana dal (split chickpeas)
  • 2 cups water (for soaking)
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 finely chopped onion
  • 1 finely chopped tomato
  • 1 chopped green chili
  • 1-inch grated piece of ginger
  • 3-4 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt as per taste
  • 2 cups water (for cooking)
  • Fresh chopped coriander leaves(for garnish)

Method:

  • Rinse the chana dal and soak the chana dal in 2 cups of water for 2 hours. Drain the water before using.
  • put the soaked chana dal, a pinch of salt and 2 cups of water to a pressure cooker.
  • Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the chana dal is soft and cooked through.
  • Heat the oil or ghee over medium flame in a separate pan.
  • Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
  • Add chopped onions and fry until they turn into golden brown.
  • Add the chopped green chili, grated ginger, and garlic. fry for a couple of minutes.
  • Add turmeric, red chili, coriander powder, and garam masala. cook for a minute.
  • Add the chopped tomato and cook until it turns soft and the oil starts to separate from the masala.
  • Add the cooked chana dal to the pan with the tempered spices. Mix it well and add salt.
  • Add about 1/2 to 1 cup of water to adjust the consistency of the dal. cook the dal for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  • Garnish the Chana Dal Fry with fresh coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with rice or roti, naan.
